In accord with the current TAI 5 year plan, the Europe section is currently sprouting much needed new trees, particularly in the hitherto sparsely planted conifer hill paddock.  These plantings are the direct result of protection from browsing animals afforded by the new electric fence.
Plantings aim to represent the broad geographic "biomes" of European temperate broadleaf deciduous woodland and boreal coniferous forest trees of Europe through
to the Siberian taiga, (excluding Mediterranean & Middle East regions). In the collection these biomes are loosely represented as follows:-
a)     Oak Avenue on the ring road and Nut Walk - mainly western Europe
temperate broadleaf deciduous trees such as Oak, Silver Birch and Hazelnut. Oaks tragically destroyed by possums are being replaced with seed off a Sulphur Creek tree provenanced from Windsor Castle.
b)    Conifer Hill south face - mainly central European boreal and deciduous trees from central European mountains, Caucasus Mountains (Georgia), Balkans and Scandinavia such as Alder, Poplar and Norway Spruce. Ribes alpina has been planted on rocky patches atop the hill.
c)     Conifer Hill north slope - East European boreal and deciduous trees including Ural mountains and Siberia. this year new plantings of  Scot's Pine, Siberian Larch, Poplar and Oaks, seeds having recently arrived curtesy of Kew Wakehurst Place.
Additionally a good deal of variously prevenanced seed has been accessed from overseas which shall be ready for planting out in subsequent years.
A new approach to maintenance of planted areas is being trialled with the broadcasting of white clover seed. This may enable grasses to be phased out in favour of a lower maintenance clover sward.
